Box Score Montreat, NC - This Wednesday, the Truett-McConnell Bears men's soccer team visited Montreat College for what turned out to be a very exciting and action-packed Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game. Both teams started the game fast, battling and competing for every ball throughout the entire match.
In the first half, both teams had chances to score. It was the Bears who opened the scoring only minutes before halftime.
James Serpas played a great ball down the line for
Josiah Saydee, who out-muscled a recovering Montreat defender and got to the by-line. Saydee squared the ball back to
Houston Kent, who saw his shot saved by the Montreat Goal Keeper. In a quick recovery of the ball, Bears Senior Captain Rudy Vazquez tapped in the rebound for a goal.
The second half started even faster than the first, with Montreat coming out of the blocks gearing for a goal. The Bears were put under pressure by the Cavalier offense, and they saw a shot hit the post from close range. Eventually, Montreat equalized the score midway through the second half.
After conceding the goal, the Bears settled back down and started to fight their way back into the game. Vazquez had a great chance to seal the victory for the Bears with only ten minutes left on the clock. Saydee rounded the Cavalier keeper and cut the ball back to Vasquez, who took another aggressive shot on-goal. The shot seemed to be heading for the back of the net, but a Montreat defender came in hard to clear the ball off the line.
With the score tied 1-1 and less than a minute left on the clock, it seemed like the game was going to head into overtime. However, in a sudden offensive move by the Bears,
Matthew Robertshaw played a long diagonal ball straight to the chest of Saydee, who expertly brought the ball down in the box, knocking it past Montreat's keeper for the win.
The 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers has the Bears sitting sixth in the ACC, but their next conference game is right around the corner. The Bears will host the Lions of Bryan College this Saturday, October 18th at 4:00pm.
