Bears Baseball Comes Out On Top On Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Cleveland, Ga. | On Friday and Saturday, the Truett McConnell Baseball team welcomed the Union College Bulldogs in a AAC weekend series. The series featured Senior Day on Saturday, as the Truett McConnell Baseball program honored the careers and contributions of seniors Andrew Fogarty, Hayden Carey, McClane Ramey, and Austin Thomas. It is evident the impact each one of these men have had on the baseball program in their time here at Truett McConnell and is certainly something to be proud of. The four seniors carry several accolades in their career, the most-noted being a NAIA Baseball National Tournament Appearance and win.

Game 1

Game 1 proved to be an offensive showcase from both sides. Union College led the game off with a 3-run home run to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Bears responded in the bottom of the 1st with a scoring outpour. Junior Patrick Overstreet hit a single to deep left to send Austin Bishop home for the first run of the game. With Josh Johnston and Overstreet on second and third, Jackson Meadors singled to centerfield to send both runners home to tie the game at 3-3. Senior McClane Ramey came up big in the inning for the Bears, as he hit an infield single to send Jackson Meadors home to take the lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Calob Rowland hit an RBI triple that sent Evan Bensch home to add to the Bears lead.

The Bulldogs answered in the top of the 4th with one run to narrow the Bears lead to 5-4.

The bottom of the 4th featured an Austin Bishop single, which led to him stealing second base. With a runner on second, Josh Johnston ripped a double to centerfield, which sent Bishop home.

The bats of the Bulldogs came alive, scoring two runs to tie the game in the top of the 5th.

The Bears continued to respond the Bulldogs, as they extended their lead in the bottom of the 5th by scoring three runs.

Sophomore Nick Hammonds entered the game in relief in the top of the 6th inning with 2 outs and finished the game for the Bears to help earn the win. Hammond would strike out four batters, while only allowing three hits.

The Bears would go on and take Game 1 from the Bulldogs by a final score of 11-6.

Game 2

The theme of high scoring offense carried over to Game 2 of the weekend series.

Hayden Carey, a senior from Athens, Georgia, started Game 2 on the mound for the Bears. This is Carey's fourth season playing for Truett McConnell, and he is currently working on his master's degree in Business Administration.

A quiet first inning was followed up with Union College scoring their first run of the game in the top of the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bears looked to continue their trend of responding in the bottom of the 2nd. Evan Bensch drew a walk to lead off the inning. With runners on first and third, senior McClane Ramey hit a sacrifice bunt that allowed Evan Bensch to score. Senior Austin Thomas then stepped to the plate and hit high chopper of the third baseman's head to drive in fellow senior Andrew Fogarty for a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs caught fire in the top of 4th inning, as they scored four runs to gain the lead.

After Union's big production in the top of the 4th, the Bears looked to match their scoring in the bottom of the 4th. With the bases loaded, junior Patrick Overstreet hit a single to send Davis Dasher across home plate. Freshman Jackson Meadors followed up Overstreet's RBI with a double which cleared the bases, as three runs scored. Evan Bensch then reached base on a walk. Andrew Fogarty, the senior from Jefferson, GA., capped off the Bears hot inning with a double that sent Meadors and Bensch home as the Bears took an 8-5 lead over the Bulldogs.

When one would have thought the bottom of the 4th inning was a hot inning, the Bears proved it to be wrong in the bottom of the 5th. The Bears pushed their lead out of reach, as they scored seven runs on three hits and two errors.

The remainder of the game was scoreless from both sides, as the Bears took a commanding 15-5 win over Union in Game 2.

Game 3

The Bears looked to take the sweep from Union entering Game 3.

The Bears struck first in the top of 1st inning. Josh Johnston hit a double which would sent Austin Bishop home for the first run of the game.

The Bulldogs then had an scoring outburst, scoring nine unanswered runs between the 2nd and 5th innings.

Calob Rowland added on the Bears only other run of the game, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th.

Union would go on to take Game 3 by a final score of 9-2.

The Bears will be back in action on Monday, April 23rd, as they travel to Lawrenceville, GA, to take on Georgia Gwinnett College at 5 PM.
