Box Score Young Harris, GA. | The Truett McConnell Bears baseball team traveled to Young Harris, GA Tuesday afternoon to take on Young Harris in a non-conference matchup.
Hayden Carey started the game for the Bears and made it evident that he was working hard to locate all of his pitches to keep Young Harris off guard.Â
Leading off the top of the 2nd inning for the Bears, Josh Johnston doubled and later was driven home by a Gaines single up the the middle putting the Bears up 1-0. Carey would get in a jam in the 2nd inning, but he was able to find his way out of it to minimize the damage allowed with only one unearned run as Young Harris fought back to make it 1-1.Â
Carey threw a dominate 3rd inning forcing weak ground outs and a fly out to centerfield. In the 4th inning, Andrew Martin walked with 2 outs, and advanced on a ball in the dirt. Austin Thomas would then drive home Martin with a double in the gap. Thomas was later chased home by a single in the hole by Overstreet. A solid 4th inning for the Bears helped them to a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th.
Cason Brown relieved Carey in the 4th inning, and although he allowed 3 runs in his first two innings pitched, he was able to find a groove and predominately work his off speed pitches to continue to keep the Mountain Lions off balance going into latter innings.Â
With the score at 4-3 for Young Harris, the Bears tied the game in the top of the 5th as Andrew Fogarty hit a solo home run over the left field wall for his second homerun of the season.
In the top of the 7th inning, Josh Johnston reachon an error and then was advanced by James Civelli's ground out to the 2nd basemen. Josh Johnston's effort to stay on base was rewarded as he would step across home plate off a wild pitch to give the Bears a 5-4 lead.
Brown was able to hold the Mountain Lions at bay through the 7th and 8th innings, recording a total of 7 K's in his 5 inning of work.Â
Craig Barton relieved Brown in the 9th inning with the tying run on base for Young Harris. This did not phase Barton as he induced a 6-4-3 double play. Barton forced another weak ground out to the short stop to secure the win for the Bears also earning his first save of the season.Â
With the win, the Bears improved their record to 8-5 on the year.
The Bears will begin conference play on March 2nd and 3rd in Dayton, Tenn. against the Bryan Lions.
