Box Score 3 Jacksonville, FL | The Truett McConnell Baseball team traveled down to Jacksonville, FL to take on Trinity Baptist in a three game series this past Friday and Saturday
Game 1
The Bears continue to jump out early as they have scored three or more runs in the 1st innings of their past three games.
Austin Bishop (JR) and
Patrick Overstreet (RSJR) have supplied a spark at the top of the Bears lineup, reaching base at a combined 48.3% giving the middle part of the order an opportunity to drive in some runs. Bishop and Overstreet would continue the trend in Game 1. In the first inning, the Bears gave starting pitcher
Evan Bensch (SO) a comfortable lead allowing him to settle in and go to work. Bensch moved smoothly through the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the 2nd, the Bears tacked on two more runs. Trinity Baptist broke through in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring two runs. The game remained 5-2 going into the 6th inning when
Josh Johnston (SO) scored on an error by Trinity's 2nd baseman. Moving to the bottom of the 7th, the Eagles scored two more runs. In the top of the 9th, the Bears pushed their lead further scoring three more runs to take Game 1 with a final score 9-4.
Evan Bensch(SO) threw 7.0 innings with 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 BB as he collected his first win on the year.
Nick Hammonds(SO) made his first appearance of the season for the Bears after battling back from a minor shoulder injury. He faced four hitters in the 8th inning and only allowed one hit.
Cody Nix finished the game in relief for the Bears in the 9th inning.
Game 2
In Game 2 of the 3, the Eagles were able to put up a four quick runs through in the first two innings.
Hayden Carey (SR) was relieved by
Nick Hammonds (SO) in the 2nd inning. Hammonds would help get the Bears out of the inning.Â
Craig Barton (FR) pitched the 3rd inning through the 6th and only allowed 2 hits. In the top of the 6th inning, the Bears were able to scratch across three runs coming of the bats of
Josh Johnston (SO) and senior
Andrew Fogarty. In the top of the 7th, the Bears were down to their final three outs, but with the help of
Mason Gaines' 1st RBI of the year and a Trinity Baptist walk, they were able to secure the lead for Greg Elder (JR) in the bottom of the 7th inning. Elder gave up a single to the second batter of the inning, but he would finish his outing with a strikeout to secure a 5-4 win for the Bears. Elder earned his first save of the season.
Game 3
The final matchup of the series was a close one. The Bears struck first as they scored the first 2 runs in the 3rd inning giving them a 2-0 lead.The Eagles pushed across their first run in the bottom of the 4th against Elder and two more in the 5th to give them a 3-2 lead to go into the latter part of the game. Both teams would go silent on the scoreboard from there, leaving the final score 3-2 as Trinity avoided the sweep by the Bears.
The Bears will be back in action today, February 27th, at Young Harris at 2 PM.
