CLEVELAND, Ga. – Truett McConnell women's volleyball split a two-match series on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-22) win over Bob Jones (0-2) and a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22) loss to Point University (3-7).
 
"We're taking some good steps forward, which is what we want to do," head coach Joe Herrera said. "We still have a lot of work to do as a team."
 
TMU stands at 4-2 overall, similar to its six-match start in the previous year.
 
Game 1: TMU 3, Bob Jones 0
Both teams battled to an 8-6 score in favor of the Lady Bears to begin the first set. With the help of two kills by Julia Fisher, the home team raced to a 22-1 lead with a scoring run of 11-1. Kills by Fisher and Forbus ended the first set and provided TMU with the early 1-0 match lead.
 
Dominance by Truett headlined the start of set two as a 7-1 lead was the result. With three errors by the Lady Bears, the Bruins capitalized and forced a three-point margin between the two teams. With the score at 13-9, TMU scored five consecutive point to gain control of the set. The home squad held set point before a comeback attempt by Bob Jones produced seven straight points, but a final serve error resulted in a 2-0 score.
 
The Lady Bears boasted another early lead, this time a 12-6 score. The Bruins fought back and made the score a one-point margin midway through the third set. Both teams went back and forth and held a tied serve at 22-22. With two errors and an ace by the Lady Bears, they closed out the set and took the 3-0 sweep.
 
Game 2: Point 3, TMU 1
The Skyhawks started on fire with a 7-3 run before Truett battled back with a 6-2 run. Both squads faced a 17-15 score in favor of the away team before eight of the next 12 points went in Point's favor, resulting in a set one loss for the home team.
 
With the score at 8-8 in set two, the Skyhawks went on a 5-2 run to make it a three-point margin. Scoring runs of 5-1 and 4-1 further distanced the away team from the Lady Bears. TMU responded with a 5-1 run of its own to cut the lead to two. At set point, a final kill by Point secured the set and put the Lady Bears behind 2-0.
 
Point once again held the advantage midway through the set, with a two-point lead in set three. TMU rattled off ten of the last 11 points of the set to comeback and force a fourth set. The run featured three kills by Kaitlyn Roper and two aces by Fisher.
 
Point fought back in the fourth with a 9-3 start with five errors by the home team. Trailing 15-9, TMU used two kills, two aces and an error by Point to cut the margin to a single point. The Skyhawks scored five of the next seven points to lead by four as the Lady Bears could not sustain momentum, lead to an eventual 3-1 match loss.
