CLEVELAND Ga. – Truett McConnell women's volleyball won two out of three matches played on Day 1 of the Bear Invitational, taking 3-0 matches vs. Montreat and Rust College before losing 3-0 to Brewton-Parker on Friday.
 
Game 1: TMU 3, Montreat 0
Both teams battled to start the first set with the score being at 8-8. With kills by Faith Clakrson and Elizabeth Cook, the Lady Bears scored a 5-2 run to bring the lead to three. With a narrow two-point Truett advantage, seven unanswered TMU points brought the gap to nine. Kills by Annabel Sauers and Cook ended the set and brought the match to 1-0 for the Lady Bears.
 
TMU brought the momentum from the first set win to the start to the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Cavelier's closed the deficit to two points before three consecutive points by the home team brought the score to 14-9. With both teams tied at 19-19, The Lady Bears scored six of the next ten point to gain the set win.
 
After a 6-2 start for Truett in set three, five unanswered points by Montreat gave it the lead for the first time in the match. Five of the next points went to the home team, giving TMU back the lead with the margin at four.
 
With the score at 18-14 in favor of the Lady Bears, The Cav's scored six straight points to regain the lead. TMU used a combined scoring run of 7-5 to outlast the away squad in the third set and take the 3-0 match win.
 
Game 2: TMU 3, Rust College 0
6-0 was the score for the Lady Bears to start the match, helped by two aces by Caroline Yeager. With a 17-9 advantage, the Bearcats scored five of the next seven points to close the gap within five. With the help of attack errors by Rust, Truett was able to close out the first set and go up 1-0.
 
Set two was all TMU as it sported leads of 9-1 and 15-2. The Bearcats could only muster up six total points as they were blown away by the home team with a 25-6 score.
 
The third set was a closer affair. With TMU leading 19-13, the Bearcats rallied for six consecutive points to tie the set. Rust used another scoring run to 4-1 to give itself the 23-22 lead, but three straight kills by Emily Miolen, Yeager and Clarkson ended the set and the match.
 
Game 3: Brewton-Parker 3, TMU 0
Although the Barons won the match 3-0, the set scores tell a different story, as BP took the sets with scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-23. Truett McConnell had its chances late in all three sets, with the first being a 21-19 deficit in set one. TMU was able to salvage a 23-21 score, but an attack error and ace by the Barons ended the set.
 
The Lady Bears held a 20-18 lead in the second set, but a scoring run of 6-1 by Brewton-Parker lost the home team the set. In the final set, TMU trailed by just a point at 24-23, but a final kill by BP ended the set and the match.
