Bears Volleyball Splits Conference Matches

This past weekend the Truett-McConnell Lady Bears split a pair of AAC match-ups between divisional foes. On Friday night, the Bears took on the Columbia College Koalas. After the Bears lost a close first set, they were able to win the second set 25-10. The next two sets went to the Koalas as they won the match in four sets on the night.

Tarryn Long and Katie Russell led the team with 11 kills each. Kendall Hardy and Hannah Simpson added six kills each. Alex Brake and Rebekah Reems combined for 36 assists.

Defensively, Jocelyn Mahayag led the team with 23 digs, while Hannah Simpson added 18 digs.

Saturday morning, the Bears faced the Knights from St. Andrews College. The Knights came into the game in sole possession of 4th place in the AAC standings. The Bears used a strong collective team effort, limiting their errors, and thus ultimately putting themselves in position to win the match-up in three consecutive sets. 

Hannah Simpson led the offense with 13 kills and only one error on 24 attempts, with a hitting percentage of .500. Tarryn Long added nine kills, while Katie Russell chipped in with seven of her own. Offensively, the team hit an astounding .360 on the match. 

Jocelyn Mahayag, who is currently ranked 2nd in the nation in digs per set, led the way defensively for the Lady Bears with 18 digs on the day. Georgia Martin (12 digs) and Hannah Simpson (11 digs) also played key roles in the Lady Bears' defensive effort. 

"I am proud of the way the girls came together and played for each other after such a big loss Friday night," said Head Coach Melody Tenney. "They definitely showed a lot of character." 

The Bears will travel to Dayton, Tennessee on Tuesday, October 13th to take on Bryan College. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm.
