60th Minute Goal Lifts TMU Over Union 1-0

Joanna Funes produced her third goal of the season in go-ahead fashion.

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Joanna Funes collected her third goal of the season to put No. 6 Truett McConnell women's soccer (6-1-1, 4-0 AAC) over Union Commonwealth (4-4-1, 2-1-1 AAC) 1-0 on Saturday.
 
The Lady Bears dominated in the shot category, putting forward 17 shots with nine on goal compared to zero for the Bulldogs. TMU also had seven corner kicks and fouled just once but it was caught offside 11 times.
 
The winning streak over Union is extended to seven games dating back to 2019. It is also the third straight match that the Bulldogs have been shutout in the series.
 
Isabella Hodson and Agathe Braud led in total shots with three each with both also having a shot on goal. Salome Deneubourg had two shots and assisted on the go-ahead shot, marking her second of the season.
 
Two offside calls occurred in the first ten minutes of the game before a foul was called on Union put the home team back in position. Agathe Braud powered two shots but none found the back of the net. The Lady Bears again had a chance with a corner kick in the 21st minute, but no shot was generated.
 
Grace Montgomery produced a shot opportunity but goalie Chiara Isanto, who made eight saves on the day, kept the scoreless tie. In the 43rd minute, Montgomery and Funes put forward a collective duo of shots, the first of which was saved while the second sailed wide. Both teams went into the half with zeros on the scoreboard.
 
The Lady Bears started fast in the second half, producing two corner kicks and four shots, three of which were saved. TMU kept the pressure up with two more corner and a header shot by Hodson in the next five minutes. Funes, with a reception from Deneubourg, made her shot count as the Lady Bears went up 1-0 in the 61st minute.
 
From minute 75 through 80, Truett McConnell created three more shots, but the score remained 1-0. The home squad shot two more times and didn't convert, but the back end held the Bulldogs to nothing as the Lady Bears collected their fifth straight win.
 
The team is back on the pitch next Wednesday on the road with a 5 p.m. match against Bryan on Sept. 30.
