Lady Bears Split Day Two in Mount Vernon

TMU played two five-set matches on Saturday.

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Truett McConnell women's volleyball (3-1) saw two five-set matches go both ways with a 3-2 (25-16, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 15-10) victory over Stillman (1-3) and a 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13) loss to Brewton-Parker (3-1) Saturday afternoon.
 
Game 1: Truett McConnell 3, Stillman 2
The Lady Bears jumped out to a 6-3 lead at the start of set one, but a 7-1 scoring run at the start of set one, but a 7-1 scoring run by the Tigers gave them the three-point advantage.
 
With the help of three kills by Anna Forbus, TMU scored 11 unanswered points to assume a commanding 18-10 lead. Stillman's hole was too deep to dig out of as Truett claimed the set one win.
 
Another strong run by the Lady Bears, this time a 9-3 mark, set them with a compelling six-point margin. A 7-2 run by the Tigers put them back within three midway through the set. The score read 19-16 in favor of Truett before a final 6-1 run provided it with a 2-0 match lead.
 
With their backs against the wall, the Tigers faced a 19-12 deficit in the third set. Stillman responded by scoring six out of the next eight points to draw within three. Truett McConnell was unable to fight back as an 8-1 run ended the set, forcing a set four.
 
Stillman kept the fire into the fourth set, scoring eight of the first ten points to lead by six. A 9-3 run by the Lady Bears helped by four Tiger errors tied the set at 11-11. Another run, this time 6-2, propelled TMU in front 17-15. However, a 9-2 run by Stillman brought forth set point, and a final serve ace finished the set, tying the match at 2-2.
 
The Tigers, with leads of 6-4 and 8-6, looked to be in control early in set five, but five unanswered points by Truett gave it the lead. With the score at 12-10, three more points ended the set and provided TMU with the five-set win.
 
Julia Fisher and Forbus led the team in kills with ten each. Grace Lamontagne produced 19 assists while Alexis Mills scored four aces.
 
Game 2: Brewton Parker 3, Truett McConnell 2
Both teams battled early with the Lady Bears holding the 9-7 advantage. The Barons responded with five consecutive points, grabbing the lead. Late in the set, Brewton-Parker had the lead with a 23-16 score, but a 7-0 run by the Lady Bears tied the set. After a Baron point, two straight BP errors provided TMU with the win in set one.
 
Truett held serve with a 12-10 score before the Barons grabbed six points in a row to take the lead. TMU was able to tie the set at 19-19, but a 6-2 run by the home team proved to be the difference and tied the match at 1-1.
 
With a 6-3 BP lead early in set three, Truett was able to score ten of the next 12 points to build a five-point margin. The away squad dominated the rest of the set, ending things with a 9-1 scoring run to take the third set.
 
Both teams battled at the start of the fourth set, resulting in a 18-14 score in favor of the home team. A 7-1 run by BP, which included five Lady Bear errors, ended the set and brought forward a fifth and final set. The Barons raced out to a 9-3 lead, looking to end the match quickly. However, the Lady Bears weren't done yet, using a combined 8-2 run to tied things at 11-11. Truett held a 13-12 advantage before three consecutive Baron points ended the set and the match.
 
Fisher and Elizabeth Cook both held eight kills as Caroline Yeager had 16 assists.
 
The Lady Bears return home for the first time this season for a two-match Saturday vs. Bob Jones and Point University on Aug. 29 in the Harris Athletic Complex.
