CLEVELAND, Ga. (February 12, 2025) – Scott Whitlock, graduate of the Truett McConnell Junior College Class of 1982, is a member the TMU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025 and will be formally inducted on Friday, February 21, during the Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony.
After graduating with his associates degree from TMC, Whitlock began his illustrious 28-year coaching career in 1985 when he was hired as the assistant women's basketball coach and assistant slow pitch softball coach at Kennesaw State. In 1986, Whitlock was appointed to the head softball coach position at KSU where he began building one of the greatest college softball programs in the country. Whitlock was known as the driving force behind the Lady Owls successful transition from slowpitch at the NAIA level to fastpitch at the NAIA, NCAA Division II and Division I levels.
At the DII level, Whitlock lead KSU to back-to-back national championships (1995,1996), while his seasons in 1999 and 2000 were seen as the best runs in KSU Softball history as the Lady Owls combined for a total of 108 wins against 15 losses (.879). From 1992-2002, Whitlock guided KSU to a final top 10 national ranking for 12 consecutive years. Whitlock holds a fastpitch coaching career record of 997-296, placing him near the top in most NCAA softball coaching categories. Whitlock has also won 13 regional crowns and has coached 51 All-Americans, as well as two-time Olympian, Colleen Thorburn. Over his 28-year career coaching both slow and fastpitch, Whitlock combines for an overall record of 1,150-311 for a winning percentage of .787.
In 2005, Whitlock was granted the highest honor of his profession when he was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida. Whitlock has also been inducted into the Cherry Hill, New Jersey based "Be the Best You Are" Softball Clinic Speakers' Hall of Fame (2003), the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame (2010), the Peach Belt Conference Hall of Fame (2016), and the Atlantic Sun Conference Hall of Fame (2024).
Upon his retirement from coaching in 2013, Whitlock was known as one of the all-time winningest and most respected coaches in NCAA Softball. Whitlock remained on staff at KSU serving as the senior associate athletic director, where he was responsible for capital projects, and served as administrator for baseball, men's golf, and volleyball, while also working closely with the football team. Whitlock has written numerous articles for various publications, while also joining FSU head football coach, Bobby Bowden and UT women's basketball coach Pat Summitt as a contributor to Dr. Stephen Brennan's book
Six Psychological Factors for Success (2001). In 2019, Whitlock published his own memoir titled
I Wasn't Expecting All This: Memoir of a Grateful Coach. Whitlock has also been featured commentating for Clemson softball games.
The TMU Hall of Fame class of 2025 will be formally inducted on Friday, February 21, inside the Harris Athletic Complex during the TMU Friends and Family Weekend.
