Bears force match-up with MGA to a draw

COCHRAN, Ga. (August 31, 2024) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University men's soccer team traveled to face Georgia State University, where the Bears battled the Knights to a 2-2 draw, after a second half comeback by TMU. The Bears rise to an overall record of 1-0-1, while MGA sits at a record of 1-1-2.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first half the Knights were hot out the gate taking their first shot in the first minute of regulation. MGA continued to attack offensively, taking three more shots, when finally in the 15th minute, contact was made, creating an early lead over the Bears (0-1). TMU continued to work hard on defense, switching their efforts forward as Oscar Brennan took TMU's first shot at the Knight's goal. MGA scored their second goal of the game in the 22nd minute when a penalty kick found its way into the back of the net (0-2). TMU took three more shots in the first half, eager to make their mark on the board, but ultimately fell short as they entered the half trailing by two.

In the second half, eager to decrease the gap, TMU focused their attention on offense, taking three shots at the goal. The Bears finally scored theirs first goal in the 67th minute when Jez Walker-Paterson took a shot on goal blocked by the Knight's keeper, right into position for Toby Berry to find the back of the net (1-2). TMU continued to work as a team aiming to even the score, when a corner kick by Brennan in the 76th minute found its way to Hendrik Metje, proving capable of giving Jovica Lazeravic space to tie up the game (2-2). Two final shots by Jose Ventura and Berry put the Bears in a possible scoring position, but was ultimately unable to connect, as the match-up finished tied, 2-2.

LEADERS
Berry and Lazeravic led the way for the Bears scoring one goal and two shots a piece, while Metje tallied one shot and one assist. Josep Moral followed with three shots, while Ventura had two shots. 

UP NEXT
TMU will host Bob Jones University on Tuesday, September 3, inside the TMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
