Women's lacrosse falls in AAC opener

CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 7, 2024) – On Wednesday, the Truett McConnell University women's lacrosse team hosted Montreat College for their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener, where the Lady Bears put up a fight against the Cavaliers, ultimately falling after a tough battle with a final score of 18-14. TMU falls to an overall record of 1-5, 0-1 AAC, while MC rises to a record of 1-5, 1-0 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, MC was first to score, forcing a quick response from the Lady Bears as Kaitlyn Morgenroth and Marlo McBrayer scored one goal apiece, followed by Shelby Nail with two goals (5-4). In the second quarter, eager to take the lead, goals by Nail, McBrayer and Katie Smith, put the Lady Bears ahead (7-6). A last chance effort in the second quarter by the visiting team, ultimately put two more goals on the board for the Cavaliers, forcing the Lady Bears behind by one at the half (8-7).
 
The third quarter saw action on both sides of the field as the Lady Bears fought hard to stay in the game. Goals by Morgenroth, Nail, Smith, and Savannah Watkins, continued to keep TMU in range, eager to change the result of the game as the Cavaliers led by three (14-11). In the final quarter, three goals by McBrayer attempted to put the Bears in front, but it was ultimately not enough to disrupt the Cavaliers lead, resulting in a final score of 18-14.
 
LEADERS
McBrayer led the way for TMU with five goals, nine shots, six on goal and 12 ground balls. Nail followed with four goals and one assist, taking nine shots with five on goal and seven ground balls. Smith and Morgenroth tallied two goals apiece, while Watkins had one goal. Goalie Sally Marcum recorded seven saves on the day. 
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will be back in action at home on Thursday, March 14, as they host St. Thomas University for a non-conference match-up inside the TMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Match time set for 6:00 p.m.
