Bears finish 3-1 in weekend series against Bruins

CLEVELAND, GA. (March 25, 2023) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team capped the four-game non-conference series against Carolina University with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took game one 6-3 and then finished the weekend with a dominating 9-1 win in game two. With the wins, TMU's record improves to 21-10 (8-6 AAC) while CU drops to 11-15.

Game One | 6-3

The Bruins struck first in the top half of the first inning with a solo run, but the Bears countered in the bottom half when Matthew Redmond led off with a double and was eventually brought home with a sacrifice fly from Mikal Marcarello to make it 1-1. Two innings later in the third, Jacob Karvales launched a two-run home run over the left-field wall, giving the Bears a 3-1 lead. In the fourth, the lead was increased to 4-1 after an Andrew Johnston RBI single to score Redmond from second base. CU answered with runs in the sixth and the seventh, but two insurance runs added by TMU in the bottom of the sixth sealed the 6-3 victory.

LEADERS

Redmond had a superior performance at the plate, going 2-4 with three runs. Karvales added two RBIs thanks to his home run in the third inning. He went 1-4 with a walk. Mascarello also knocked in two runs after going 1-2 with a run. Johnston, Williams and Russell Kiser also recorded hits.

Pitcher Andrew Fry picked up the win after pitching six innings, giving up only two runs off three hits and knabbing three punchouts.

GAME 2 | 9-1
TMU didn't lose any momentum in game two, coming out of the gates with five runs in the first two innings. In the first, Redmond and Griffith got on base after a pair of walks only to score a couple of batters later when Karvales singled to left field to make it 2-0. In the second inning, Kiser led off with a solo home run to make it 3-0. The Bears added more two runs the same inning, increasing their lead to 5-0. Mascarello would make it 6-0 with an RBI single fourth inning. Then in the sixth, TMU made it 9-0 after Jordan Kenty tripled with the bases loaded, scoring three runs. CU would avoid the shutout with a lone run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as TMU completed the series sweep with the 9-1 win.
