Bears soar past Bruins in midweek showdown

CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 28, 2023) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team hosted Bob Jones University in a non-conference midweek match-up, where the Bears bats come to life to secure a 15-7 victory. TMU rises to an overall record of 22-10, while the Bruins fall to a record of 3-18.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Bruins were first on the board with one run on two hits, but that was no match for the Bears (0-1). TMU turned and responded in the bottom of the first with walks from Matthew Redmond and Andrew Johnston to put runners in scoring position. The bottom of the second featured a Redmond single and Johnston's two-run blast over the fence to add to TMU's score (4-1). Both teams were even in play until the top of the fifth saw the Bruins with a homerun of their own (4-2). The bottom of the fifth turned the tide and was sparked with a Williams single, paired with Jordan Kenty hit by pitch and Russell Kiser single to right field (5-2). A Redmond hit by pitch loaded the bases, followed by a grand slam from Johnson for his second home run of the game (9-2). Singles from Tanner Griffith, Mascarello and Williams continued to tack on runs for the Bears (10-2). The top of the sixth and seventh saw the Bruins respond with four runs on three hits to work their way from behind (10-6). The bottom of the seventh and eighth was sparked by singles from Jakob Karvelas and Jake Edwards to push two runs across (12-7). TMU scored their final runs of the game with a Griffith double and Karvelas single to right field, giving the Bears a 15-7 victory.
