BLUEFIELD, Va. (February 11, 2023) - The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to face Appalachian Athletic Conference member Bluefield University, where the Lady Bears late run was not enough as they fell to a final score of 63-69. TMU falls to a record of 7-18, 6-16 AAC, while the Rams rise to 12-13, 12-10 AAC.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lady Bears were first on the board with a jump shot from Alysee Dobbs and Quan Holton for an early lead, while the Rams responded with multiple shots to steal the advantage. Back-to-back layups and free throw from Camilla Callihan pushed TMU forward until shots from the Rams propelled them ahead. A jump shot from Chloe Williams brought the score even at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams were evenly matched, but consecutive shots in the paint from Dobbs put the Lady Bears on top. Layups from Destinee Lovejoy and Dobbs continued to add to TMU's lead, followed by a jump shot from Sydnie Smith to send TMU into the half with a 27-21 lead.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears were electric from the start with a three-point shot from Callihan and layup from Dobbs. The Rams responded with shots of their own, but a layup from Holton kept the game even. A layup from Kacie Williams sent TMU into the final quarter with a tied game (40-40). In the fourth quarter, the Rams quickly jumped on the Bears with multiple shots to create a large deficit. Layups from Holton and Dobbs, paired with a shot in the paint from Dobbs worked to cut at the deficit. Multiple shots from the Rams continued to increase the score, but a three-pointer from Chloe Williams gave the Lady Bears hope. Final layups from Holton and Williams brought TMU within four but was ultimately not enough as they fell by slim margins (63-69).
LEADERS
Most notable, Dobbs recorded a double-double with 21 points, going 9-17 in the paint with 14 rebounds. Holton followed with 13 points, going 5-6 in the paint and 3-4 at the free-throw line. Callihan recorded nine points, going 1-1 behind the three-point arc with eight rebounds. Williams tallied seven points, going 3-4 at the free-throw line and 2-5 in the paint.
