Women's Basketball falls short in second half battle

CLEVELAND, Ga. (December 9, 2023) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Faulkner University in a non-conference match-up, where the Lady Bears worked hard but ultimately were left behind, falling to a final score of 66-49. TMU falls to an overall record of 2-9, while FU rises to a record of 6-8.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The eagles were first to make their mark in the first quarter, while Alexis Brewster quickly responding with a three-pointer from Mahalah Stewart. Both teams battled for the lead as the visitors took their chance to lead TMU, when a good three-pointer by Stewart kept the game even. Brewster once again found herself at the three-point line, scoring a another three-pointer, followed by a layup and two free throw shots. Kayleigh Kelly kept the momentum rolling with a three-pointer, putting pressure on the Eagles, ending the quarter 16-18. In the second quarter, eager to take the lead, layups by Kelley and Brinkley Kate Reed, put the Lady Bears up by slim margins. TMU continued to hold their own as layups by Kacie Williams and Brewster, paired with a three-pointer by Ava Queen, kept the Bears close, entering the half, 29-32.
 
In the third quarter the Eagles found a change in pace, increasing their lead by five. TMU did not lose heart as a jump shot and layup by Brewster kept the Lady Bears in the game. A layup by Kelley, followed by a jump shot by Destinee Lovejoy attempted to decrease the visiting teams lead as the Lady Bears were forced to work from behind, ending the third quarter, 39-50. The final quarter saw the Eagles once again up first. A good free throw by Sydnie Smith, a layup by Alysee Dobbs, and a jump shot by Stewart, attempted to shorten the gap. A last chance three-pointer by Kelley, gave the Lady Bears a fighting chance, but was ultimately not enough, falling to a final score of 49-66.
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way for the Lady Bears with 16 points and three blocks. Kelly followed with 12 points, while Stewart tallied five points and four assists. Queen was featured contributing five point and five rebounds, while Smith had three points and five rebounds. 
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will travel to Laurinburg, N.C. on Tuesday, December 12, to take on St. Andrews University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
