LAURINBURG, N.C. (December 12, 2023) – On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to compete in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up against St. Andrews University, where the Lady Bears recorded a sharp performance against the Knights, besting SAU with a final score of 84-74. TMU rises to an overall record of 3-9, 3-5 AAC, while SAU falls to a record of 3-7, 2-7 AAC.Â

PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, TMU was first to score with a layup by
Alexis Brewster. The Lady Bears continued to take an early lead with another layup followed by a three-pointer by Brewster. Both teams battled hard, as the Knights attempted to gain control, but layups by
Brinkley Kate Reed and
Mahalah Stewart, kept SAU from getting close. The final minutes of the quarter saw SAU find their ground as both teams worked to maintain control, when a free throw by SAU, left the Lady Bears trailing by one as they ended the first quarter 20-21. The second quarter began with two good free throws by Brewster as TMU worked hard from behind. The Knights continued to push ahead, but TMU did not lose hope as three-pointer by
Kayleigh Kelley and a layup by
Alysee Dobbs gave the Lady Bears the opportunity to pull ahead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stewart and Reed increased the Lady Bears lead by eight, entering the half, 43-35.

In the third quarter, the Knights were first to make a move, but their success was short lived as a layup by Brewster kept TMU ahead by slim margins. The knights managed to pull ahead in the last few remaining minutes of the quarter until layups by Brewster and Reed, followed by two three-pointers from Reed, proved to be the difference maker of the game. In the final quarter, SAU never regained the lead as the Lady Bears worked as a team to get the job done. Layups by Dobbs and Brewster continued to add to the score, when a final layup by
Ava Queen, followed by good free throws from Stewart and Kelly, ultimately resulted in a Lady Bears win, with a final score of 84-74.

LEADERS
Brewster led the way for the Lady Bears, recording a double-double, with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and going 2-2 at the three-point arch. Reed followed with 15 points, while Stewart recorded 12 points and four assists. Dobbs was featured contributing 12 points with seven rebounds, while Kelley had 10 points and six rebounds. Queen recorded nine points and 10 rebounds, respectfully.
