Lady Bears fall in overtime battle against Brenau

CLEVELAND, Ga. (December 6, 2023) – On Wednesday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team hosted Brenau University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up, where the Lady Bears showed their grit, forcing the game into overtime, but ultimately fell short to a final score of 80-76. TMU falls to an overall record of 2-8, 2-5 AAC, while BU rises to a record of 3-5, 2-4 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first quarter, the Golden Tigers were first on the board, while the Lady Bears quickly responded with layups by Alexis Brewster and Mahalah Stewart, followed by a three pointer from Stewart. TMU continued to fight for the lead as back-to-back layups by Kacie Williams sent the Lady Bears ahead by three. The game was evenly matched until a layup by Sydnie Smith put TMU ahead as they entered the second quarter, 17-14. The second quarter saw the Lady Bears eager to increase the scoring margin with a jump shot and layup by Alysee Dobbs. Free throws by Smith and Brinkley Kate Reed, followed by a three-pointer by Reed continued to increase TMU's lead by 10 points. The Lady Bears continued to hold their own, proving to be a fierce competitor as halftime began with the score set at 41-32.
 
The third quarter saw a change in pace for the visiting team, but the Lady Bears did not lose heart as two layups by Brewster and multiple good free throws by Stewart and Reed increased the score. TMU continued to work hard on offense as a layup by Destinee Lovejoy and a three-pointer by Dobbs increased the margin to 18. Both teams battled back and forth as BU worked to make a change, entering the fourth quarter 59-46. In the fourth quarter, both teams went head-to-head with BU first to respond. The Lady Bears continued to work as a team as a layup by Smith tied the game. A last chance three-pointer by the Golden Tigers threatened to take the game, but a clutch layup by Brewster off an offensive rebound tied the game 69-69, forcing an overtime period.
 
In overtime, BU was first to take the lead, forcing the Lady Bears to work from behind. Free throws by Dobbs, followed by a layup by Stewart, gave TMU a fighting chance, but was ultimately not enough to secure the win, ending the game 80-76.
 
LEADERS
Brewster led the way with 17 points and six rebounds, while going 9-11 at the free throw line. Stewart followed with 15 points, going 3-4 in free throws, while Dobbs recorded 13 points, six rebounds, and going 4-5 in free throws. Reed was featured tallying 12 points, while Lovejoy had 7 points and nine rebounds. Ava Queen contributed 11 rebounds, respectfully.

TMU will be back in action on Saturday, December 9, as they host Faulkner University for a non-conference match-up, inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. Tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
