Lady Bears secure AAC road win

BLUEFIELD, Va. (November 11, 2023) – On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to compete in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up against Bluefield University, where the Lady Bears secured their first win of the season on the Rams home turf with a score of 76-66. TMU rises to a record of 1-3, 1-1 AAC, while the Rams fall to a record of 0-4, 0-2 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first period, the Lady Bears were quick to move with a jump shot by Mahalah Stewart to put TMU on the board. The Rams fought back hard, increasing their lead by seven-points, but the Lady Bears didn't lose heart as layups by Sydnie Smith and Alexis Brewster kept TMU in the game (12-19). The second period saw the Rams eager to increase their lead, but was short lived as multiple layups and good free throws from Alysee Dobbs, followed by a three-pointer from Brinkley Kate Reed decreased the margin, as TMU entered the half, 30-37.
 
The third period began with a three-pointer by Dobbs in the first seconds of regulation. The Lady Bears continued to battle hard when layups by Dobbs, Smith and Brewster followed by a clutch three-pointer from Reed put TMU up by two. TMU continued to show their grit with a layup by Brewster to put the Lady Bears up by five as they entered the final period, 54-49. The Lady Bears kept the lead for the entire fourth period, increasing the gap by nine points, as two good free throws by Smith ultimately sealed the deal on a TMU win with a final score of 75-66.
 
LEADERS
Dobbs led the way for the Lady Bears with 23 points and six rebounds, while going 2-3 at the free throw line and 3-4 at the three-point arch. Brewster followed closely behind, recording a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds and going 4-6 at the free throw line. Smith was seen recording nine points and going 3-4 at the free throw line, while Reed had eight points and went 2-2 for free throws.

The Lady Bears will be back in action at home on Tuesday, November 14, as they take on AAC foe, Milligan University, inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
