Lady Bears fall in season opener

MARIETTA, Ga. (October 28, 2023) - On Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to Life University to compete in their season opener, where the Lady Bears played with heart but ultimately fell to the Eagles, 47-75. 

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Eagles started early with two good shots in the first period, while Alysee Dobbs quickly responding with a layup to put TMU on the board. The Eagles continued to hold their lead forcing the Lady Bears to work hard from behind early. In the second period, the Lady Bears found their groove with two good free throws by Destinee Lovejoy. Eager to decrease the scoring gap, a layup by Mahalah Stewart, followed by two shots by Dobbs, gave the Lady Bears hope as they entered halftime, 20-41.

In the third period, the Eagles once again were first to take action, adding to their lead. A three pointer from Lovejoy and good free throws by Brinkley Kate Reed and Dobbs sent TMU into the fourth period, trailing 40-59. The fourth period saw a shot from Stewart, followed by a three-pointer from Ava Queen. As the Eagles grew their lead, two good free throws by Kayleigh Kelley was TMU's last hope, leaving the Lady Bears to fall 47-75. 

LEADERS

Dobbs led the way with 11 points, going 5-6 at the free throw line with five rebounds. Alexis Brewster followed with nine points and going 3-4 from the free throw line. Kacie Williams followed with six points and four rebounds, while Stewart and Lovejoy each recorded five points, with Lovejoy going 2-2 at the free throw line.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Thursday, November 2, as they take on Toccoa Falls College for their home-opener inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
