TMU shows out in game two to secure AAC split

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 8, 2022) - On Friday, the Truett McConnell University softball team traveled to Columbia, S.C. to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Columbia College. The Lady Bears fell short in game one (1-3), but came back with a striking 7-2 win over the Koalas. TMU improves to a record of 18-19, 11-5 AAC, while the Koalas improve to 12-15, 6-11 AAC.

GAME 1 | 1-3

In game one, TMU was quick to score with an Alicia Price walk and singles from Lexie Simonton, Briley Lawson and Kyndall Gipson. A clutch walk from Mattie Brooks scored Gipson, but proved to be the only run for the Lady Bears (1-0). The Koalas retaliated and scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, leaving TMU to fall 1-3.

LEADERS

Price led the way offensively, going 2-3 at the plate with one run. Brooks tallied the only RBI of the game. Gipson and B. Lawson were both 1-3 at the plate.

Pitcher Kyleigh Sanders recorded two strikeouts over three innings. Ellie McCloy recorded three strikeouts over four innings.

GAME 2 | 7-2

In game two, the Koalas were first to strike with a run in the bottom of the first (1-0). The Lady Bears retaliated with a Camryn Halliday walk, followed by a steal for Simonton. A sacrifice bunt from Rachel Morgan put Simonton in scoring position. Ellie Abner hit an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1. The offense exploded in the top of the sixth, starting with a Gipson single. Two misplayed balls for Mikayla Sullens and Price scored Gipson (2-1). A Simonton single and Morgan double increased the score to 4-1. A fielder's choice led Simonton to score, finishing the inning at 5-1. TMU secured the victory with another Sullens and Price single to put runners in scoring position. An RBI single for Simonton and a fielder's choice scored the final two runs of the game (7-1). The Koalas tried to make a comeback, but only scored one final run in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the Lady Bears to a 7-2 victory.

LEADERS

Brooks led the way offensively, going 2-4 at the plate and tallying one RBI. Sullens also went 2-4 at the plate and tallied one run. Simonton followed, going 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs. Gipson was 1-3 at the plate with two runs. Morgan was 1-3 with two RBI's

Pitcher Karley Hobbs threw a complete game and recorded six strikeouts.

The Lady Bears return home to the TMU Softball Complex to face AAC foe, Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday, April 9. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
