Bears collect non-conference sweep over Bob Jones

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 19, 2022) – On Tuesday, the Truett McConnell University baseball team hosted Bob Jones University in a non-conference doubleheader, inside the TMU Baseball Complex. The Bears secured both victories by dominating on offense and defense, winning 7-1 and 13-5. TMU improves to an overall record of 23-17, while the Bruins fall to 7-24.

GAME 1 | 7-1

In game one, the Bears were first to score in the bottom of the second off a lead-off Jake Edwards double and a Sam Reed fielder's choice (1-0). In the third inning, Tanner Griffith was hit by a pitch, followed by an Edwards walk to put runners in scoring position. A Reed walk led Griffith to score, making it 2-0. The Bear's were hot in the fourth, starting with an Ethan Roberts and Mikal Mascarello walk. A Brady Wilson sacrifice fly scored one and a Griffith single scored another (4-0). A Cade Kiniry single to left scored another, making the score 5-0. The Bruins scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but two more runs in the bottom of the sixth secured a 7-1 TMU victory.

LEADERS

Edwards led offensively, going 2-3 at the plate with one run. Griffith followed, going 1-3 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs. Kiniry and Reed were both 1-3 at the plate, Kiniry tallied one RBI and Reed tallied two RBIs.

Pitcher Caleb Johnson held the Bruins to eight hits in four innings while tallying six strikeouts. Jared Johnson and Dawson Sorrells also tallied two strikeouts apiece. 

GAME 2 | 13-5

In game two, TMU was hot out of the gates with a Griffith single, followed by a Will Ingram and Mikal Mascarello single to load the bases. A Roberts hit by pitch, Edwards single, Kiniryv single, and Matt Redmond sacrifice fly scored five runs (5-0). The Bruins retaliated with a run of their own in the second, but it did not take TMU long to respond. The second inning saw a Griffith, Ingram and Mascarello walk to load the bases again. A Roberts single, Edwards fielder's choice and Kiniry misplayed ball scored three runs (8-1). Gage Smith singled to center to score another two runs (10-1). The Bruins scored again in the sixth and tried to rally late, but TMU outhit the Bruins to secure a 13-5 victory.

LEADERS

Ingram, Roberts and Kiniry led the way offensively, going 2-3 at the plate each. Roberts tallied two RBIs, while Kiniry tallied three RBIs. Griffith was 1-2 with two RBIs while Mascarello was 1-3 with three runs.

Pitcher Miller McCathren threw three innings and tallied two strikeouts. Jonathan Joiner recorded three strikeouts while Andrew Fry and Reece Blackiston recorded one strikeout apiece.

UP NEXT

The Bears hit the road on Friday, April 23 to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Milligan University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
