TMU bears down to steal sweep from Knights

CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 11, 2022) – The Truett McConnell University softball team secured two wins over St. Andrews University for an Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep, with the first win in five innings (14-0) and the second win with a score of 4-0.  

GAME 1 | 14-0 (5 Innings) 

Lexi Simonton sparked the bottom of the first inning with a lead off single, while Briley Lawson followed up with a single to left to score Simonton from second for the first run of game one (1-0). Mattie Brooks doubled to deep left for three RBIs, while Mikayla Sullens singled to center for two RBIs. The Lady Bears continued to add five more runs in the first inning, with the final two off a Brooks two RBI double (11-0). Pitcher Ellie McCloy held her own on the mound, with zero runs earned by the Knights. TMU saw Kyndall Gipson with a single run homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the third, followed by a Morgan Chancey double to left to score Rachel Morgan and the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth from a Brooks single to make the score 14-0. 

LEADERS 

Brooks led the way going 3-4 at the plate, featuring six RBIs and one run. Gipson led going 2-2 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs and two walks, while Alicia Price went 2-3 with two runs. Lawson went 2-3 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, followed by Morgan and Simonton who went 1-3 and had two runs apiece. McCloy recorded the win after pitching through 4.0 innings with zero runs scored, while Emma Vessell recorded a single strikeout on the day.  

GAME 2 | 4-0 

Lawson broke it open in the top of the third with an RBI single to left, scoring Simonton from second. Brooks followed with an RBI single of her own, while Morgan scored Gipson from third with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop (3-0). Pitcher Karley Hobbs carried the momentum on the mound by shutting down St. Andrews offense, and Justine Kennington tallied the final RBI of the game with and executed ball to the right side to score Sullens from third (4-0).  

LEADERS 

Lawson led the way going 1-3 at the plate with a single run and single RBI, while Brooks and Morgan individually went 1-3 with a single RBI. Sullens went 1-2 with one run, followed by Price and Aguiar who recorded one hit of their own. Hobbs earned the win after pitching through 5.0 innings and recorded four strikeouts, while Brianna McCarty tallied two strikeouts on the day.  

UP NEXT 

The Lady Bears are back in action tomorrow, inside the TMU Softball Complex for an AAC double feature against Brenau University. Game times set for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
