Bears steal win from SWU in seven innings

CLEVELAND, Ga. (February 8, 2022) – The Truett McConnell University baseball team captured their fourth win of the season on Tuesday, inside the TMU Baseball complex. The Bears dominated in non-conference play as they clinched an 11-1 victory in seven innings over Southern Wesleyan University. TMU improved to a 4-1 record, while the Warriors fell 2-2.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The bottom of the first inning saw the Bears hit the ground running with am early 6-0 lead. A single up the middle from Andrew Johnston sparked the rally, followed by back to back errors by the Warriors to allow TMU to score their first run. Brady Wilson doubled to left field to score Mikal Mascarello from second, Kodi Bishop put the ball in play to score pinch runner Cade Kiniry from third, Griffin Kanelos doubled to deep left to score two runs and Ethan Roberts hit an RBI single to end the inning.

Pitchers Reece Blackiston and Tyler Gray kept the SWU offense quiet, while the Bears added another run in the bottom of the third, when an RBI single from Tanner Griffith scored Matthew Redmond from third (7-0). TMU continued increase their lead, featuring a Kanelos homerun over the left field fence and a Johnston RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning (10-0). The Warriors were capable of scoring a single run in the top of the seventh, ultimately not enough as the Bears clinched an 11-1 run rule victory.

LEADERS

Johnston led the way going 3-4 at the plate, along with one run and one RBI. Kanelos went 2-3 at the plate, with two runs and three RBIs. Griffith and Wilson individually had two hits, one run and one RBI, while Ingram had a single hit and two RBIs. Redmond had one hit and one run, followed by Roberts who had one hit and one RBI.

Gray earned his first career win after pitching 4.0 innings and recorded six strikeouts, one hit, zero runs and zero walks. Blackiston pitched 2.0 innings and recorded a single strikeout, three hits, zero runs and zero walks. John James pitched a single inning and recorded two strikeouts.

UP NEXT

The Bears are back inside the TMU Baseball Complex on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday Feb. 12, where they will compete in a series against Indiana University Kokomo. Game one set for Friday at 3:00 p.m.
