MONTREAT, N.C. (December 7, 2022) - The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to face Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, Montreat College, where the Lady Bears fell after a strong first half (56-65). TMU falls to a record of 2-8, 2-7 AAC, while the Cavaliers rise to 8-2, 6-2 AAC.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lady Bears were hot out of the gates with a fastbreak layup from Sydnie Smith, followed by a shot behind the three-point arc from Chloe Williams. Another layup from Smith along with layups from Quan Holton and Gwyn Andrews kept TMU in the lead. Back-to-back three-pointers and a layup from Re'Tavia Floyd gave put the Lady Bears ahead 19-13 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, another Floyd shot from behind the three-point arc added to TMU's advantage, forcing the Cavaliers to work from behind. The Cavaliers did not back down as they worked to bridge the gap, trialing by slim margins. As the Cavaliers chipped away at the score, while a shot in the paint from Jordyn Wilder kept TMU ahead, but a late rally sent the Lady Bears into the half trailing 27-30.
After the half, the Cavaliers grew their lead with free throws,but a layup from Camilla Callihan kept the Lady Bears in the game. Two free throws from Tia Shelton and Andrews brought TMU within five, where a three-point shot from Kacie Williams brought the Lady Bears within two (39-41). In the final quarter, a fastbreak layup from Williams and a three-pointer from Floyd recaptured TMU's lead. Both teams were neck-and-neck until a strong rally from the Cavaliers created a 10-point deficit, and a final layup from Shelton proved not enough (56-65).
LEADERS
Floyd led the way with 14 points, going 5-15 in the paint with four rebounds. Holton followed with eight points, going 3-7 in the paint with seven rebounds. Williams and Andrews recorded seven points apiece, where Williams was 2-2 at the free throw line while Andrews was 5-6 at the free throw line.
