LAURINBURG, N.C. (Nov. 4, 2022) - The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled for their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener against St. Andrews University, where the Lady Bears opened conference play with a dominating victory, 72-58. TMU rises to a record of 1-1, 1-0 AAC, while the Knights fall to 0-1, 0-1 AAC.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lady Bears and Knights were evenly matched from the start, but a layup from Camilla Callihan put TMU on the board. A jump shot from Quan Holton and a free throw from Alysee Dobbs quickly tied the score. The Knights rallied ahead, forcing TMU to work from behind with a jump shot from Re'Tavia Floyd and another free throw from Dobbs. A turnover from the Knights propelled TMU forward with a free throw and a three-pointer from Tia Shelton. A free throw from Kacie Williams, followed by a Dobbs layup and free throw continued to add to the Lady Bears' lead. A three-pointer from Natalie Nixon and Floyd closed out the first half with TMU ahead 41-24.
In the third and fourth quarter, the Knights had to work hard to close the margin. A layup from Holton and a three-pointer from Floyd held the Knights at bay, but the Knights were persistent. Two successful free throws from Floyd and Holton grew the Lady Bears' lead, where a Dobbs layup propelled them ahead. The Knights were able to gain momentum to take final shots of their own, but the Lady Bears secured a 72-58 victory.
LEADERS
Most notable, Dobbs led the way with a double-double, recording 20 points, going 4-6 at the free throw line, and recorded 12 rebounds. Holton followed with 16 points, going 6-12 in the paint, while recording five rebounds. Floyd tallied 16 points, going 3-4 at the free throw line. Nixon and Sydnie Smith recorded seven rebounds apiece.
