No. 25 Lady Bears battle USCB to a 1-1 draw

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Mar. 20, 2021) – After 110 minutes, the Truett McConnell University women's soccer team came up with a 1-1 draw with the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Saturday afternoon at the TMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. This is TMU's second tie of the season, which put the Lady Bears at 12-2-2, 12-0-1 AAC and the Sand Sharks at 10-7-1.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Sand Sharks charged the field right away taking three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, while TMU was held to none. Ashleigh Smitherman took one of TMU's two shots in the first period 14 minutes in, while the Lady Bears continued to battle holding the Sand Sharks scoreless on eight of their shots through the first half. Though the score remained 0-0 at halftime, USCB scored on their first shot of the second half (0-1) six minutes in.

Smitherman, again, took one of TMU's two shots in the second period, but it wasn't until the 83rd minute that the Lady Bears found the back of the net. After a USCB defender attempted to clear a TMU cross inside the 18, Lyndsey Darden came up with the ball and took one dribble to finish in the bottom left corner of the net to match the Sand Sharks' lone goal (1-1). USCB was only allowed two more shots the rest of the way, which were both off a corner kick, but the game was ultimately forced into overtime. Only one shot was taken the rest of the way, which was saved by Addy Galason, as the game resulted in a final score of 1-1.

LEADERS

Smitherman led with two shots, one on goal, while Darden and Hope Kenney each took one of their own. Galason recorded her second tie of the season with four saves.

Overall, both teams earned a total of five corner kicks, while USCB outshot the Lady Bears 12-4.

The Lady Bears will wrap up their regular season on the road at No. 4 Keiser University on Friday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m. The No. 1-seeded Lady Bears are set to host No. 4-seeded Montreat College for the semi-final game of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m., at the TMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
