MONTREAT, N.C. (Sept. 19, 2020) --Â The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team matched up in Appalachian Athletic Conference play against Montreat College for the season opener on Saturday evening on the road. The Lady Bears battled the Cavaliers into double over time, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Cavaliers made a quick start by taking three shots on goal in the first five minutes of the first half, but the Lady Bears did not hesitate to make their way to the home team's side of the field. The defending Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Champions put pressure on the Cavaliers by taking three shots of their own, while also earning a corner kick at the 16-minute mark.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Lady Bears continued to outshoot the Cavaliers in the second half of regulation (12-6) and throughout both overtime periods (3-1). TMU did not allow Montreat a single corner kick as they dominated on defense along with offense and fought until the very end with the final result of 0-0.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Tough first game against a well drilled and organized team," Head Coach David McDowell. "We did a lot of things well but unfortunately, we couldn't get the win. The girls have shown great attitude throughout the preseason. They are all coachable and work hard and so I know we'll be able to use this experience positively moving forward."
LEADERS
Senior Tori Wilson and sophomore Madison Wright lead the team individually with four shots, while junior Sydney League and sophomore Ashleigh Smitherman added two shots apiece. Sophomore Kristin Beasley, freshman Natalie Alamri, and freshman Brianna Hernandez all tallied a shot as well.
Addy Galason made her debut as a Lady Bears recording two saves, while fellow goalkeeper, junior Jessica Hale, tallied one save of her own.
