Men’s soccer comes up short in season opener

MONTREAT, N.C. (Sept. 19, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team traveled to Montreat College for their season and Appalachian Athletic Conference opener on Saturday. Despite a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers scored their first goal of the season in the second to hand the Bears their first loss of the season (1-0).

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Although Montreat earned four corner kicks throughout the first 45 minutes of play, the Bears' defense was resilient. In fact, both teams accounted for a total of six shots in the first half, but it was TMU Trevor Fick's that was the only one on target. Montreat, however, would pick up the pace in the second half to outshoot 12-3.

After the Cavaliers took four shots, in comparison to TMU's one, throughout the first 20 minutes of the second half, Montreat eventually found the back of the net in the 71st minute (1-0). Although the Bears took two more shots, TMU was never capable of answering with a goal of their own.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"Really pleased with the heart and grit the boys played with tonight," Head Coach Scott Borchers said. "The result didn't go our way, but for our first game together, we have a lot of positives to take away."

LEADERS
Fick and freshman Lucan Yates led the offense with three shots apiece. Freshman Tristan Cheves added two shots, while senior Dean Khan recorded one himself. Junior goalkeeper David Windmiller earned a total of three saves on the night.
