ATLANTA, Ga. (Feb. 8, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University women's lacrosse team traveled to NCAA DIII Oglethorpe University on Saturday afternoon for their season opener. The Lady Bears fell to the Petrels by a slim margin (14-11).
Although Oglethorpe was capable of scoring two right away (0-2), freshman Sophie Beach made her debut as Lady Bear with a goal, assisted by Cameron Lee, in the 23rd minute (1-2). The Petrels answered with another goal (1-3) but eight seconds later, freshman Carter Culverhouse scored on a free position shot (2-3). The Petrels scored another unassisted goal to get ahead by two again (2-4) but sophomore Hope Foster scored an unassisted goal for the Bears with 11:50 to go before the half (3-4).
Oglethorpe scored two more (3-6) but Hope F. found the back of the net for her second unassisted goal (4-6) and Holly Foster scored on a free position shot with 14 seconds before halftime to put the Lady Bears behind by one (5-6). However, it was only up from there for the Petrels.
Oglethorpe opened up the second half on a 6-0 scoring run (5-12). Hope F. scored with 19 minutes to go in the game (6-12) and with 17 minutes to go in the game but each were answered right away (7-14). The Petrels scored their final goal with 12:55 remaining, while Holly F. scored three and Culverhouse scored another in the final 12 minutes of the game to get TMU within three (11-14) but it proved not enough as the Petrels claimed their first win of the season over the Lady Bears.
Holly F. led the way with 11 shots, seven on goal, while Hope F. added eight, all on target, and Culverhouse tallied seven. Holly F. and Hope F. each had four goals and Lee was credited two assists. Sophomore Christian Roberts was credited three saves on the day.
Up next, the Lady Bears are set to host Brevard College on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 3:00 p.m., for their home opener.
