CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 29, 2020) – The No. 14 Truett McConnell University softball team defeated College of Coastal Georgia 9-1 in six innings and No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett College 4-1 at day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday. The Lady Bears improved to 8-2 on the year.
Most notable, senior Bethany Hyde threw a no hitter in game one to lead the Lady Bears to victory against the Mariners (9-1). Fellow senior Liz Bunton got the Lady Bears on the scoreboard in the first with a two-RBI double (2-0). Four more runs came in the second off of three singles (6-0) and TMU added another in the third, which featured a couple of walks and another TMU single (7-0). Although Coastal Georgia added one of their own in the fifth (7-1), the Lady Bears put the game out of reach for the Mariners in the sixth scoring two more runs after a Sara Sullivan triple down the right field line and two more singles (9-1).
Junior All-American Karley Hobbs also had a stellar day from the mound for TMU throwing a complete game of two hits to lead the Lady Bears to their second win of the day over No. 5 GGC. A walk allowed the Lady Bears to get up on the scoreboard in the first (1-0), but sophomore Alicia Price brought home runners on second and third with a single to immediately put the Lady Bears ahead by three (3-0). The second inning, however, saw freshman Ellie Abner blast a solo home run over the fence for her first collegiate hit (4-0). Nonetheless, the Grizzlies were only able to score once in the fifth (4-1) and it proved not enough as TMU clinched their Saturday sweep.
Up next, the Lady Bears will face Georgetown College for their final outing in the tournament on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
