CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2020) – After a tied game at the half (24-24) and at the end of the third quarter (38-38), the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team fell three points shy (64-61) of pulling off the Appalachian Athletic Conference victory in their home finale on Wednesday evening against Point University. The Lady Bears fell to 14-15, 9-14 AAC on the season, while the Skyhawks improved to 15-13, 12-12 AAC.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Lady Bears opened up the first 10 minutes of play to outscore by four (14-10), and then lead by as much as six in the second quarter. A few free throws, however, allowed the Skyhawks to tie it back up in the final minute before the half (24-24). TMU came out hot in the second half draining back to back 3-pointers to get out front but it was only a matter of time before both teams exchanged the lead again back and forth. In fact, it was Quan Holton's 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds that tied it back up at the end of the third (38-38).
The game was tied five times throughout the fourth quarter with the Skyhawks leading by as much as seven and the Lady Bears leading by as much as one. Sydney Rumble drained a 3-pointer with 1:33 on the clock to tie it up (57-57), but Point answered with a couple of free throws and a 3-pointer of their own (57-62). A Sierra Kendall bucket in the paint and two back to back Holton free throws brought the Lady Bears within one (61-62) with 16 seconds to go but the Skyhawks forced a turnover that ultimately proved to be the difference in the end (61-64).
LEADERS
Holton led the way with a season high double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Kendall added a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Holton was credited four assists, and Kendall added three blocks and two assists. Re'tavia Floyd, the team's leading scorer, added 12 points.
