Women’s basketball stumbles at Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 17, 2020) – After winning their first Appalachian Athletic Conference game of the season on Saturday, the Truett McConnell University women's basketball team faced Union College for their second AAC road game on Tuesday evening. The Lady Bears suffered a 71-48 loss to the Bulldogs, who are fresh off a dominating victory over AAC foe Reinhardt University and receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 poll. TMU fell to 4-2, 1-2 AAC on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 3-1, 2-0 AAC.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
Junior Quan Holton opened up the game for TMU with a bucket in the paint (2-0), but that would be the last time the Lady Bears possessed a lead. While Union led by as much as nine, TMU got back within three before the end of the first. The second quarter, however, saw Union shoot 83.3% from the field to outscore by five (14-19), which ultimately gave them a 10-point lead at halftime (26-36).
 
The Lady Bears came out from halftime to win the third quarter by two (15-13). In fact, TMU went on a strong 10-2 scoring run to get back within single digits (39-47), which was fueled by a Sierra Kendall bucket in the paint. TMU eventually got back within nine again in the fourth (46-55), but the Bulldogs pulled away in the fourth and the Lady Bears were never able to fully recover.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Overall, the hot-shooting Bulldogs shot 46% from the field, while the Lady Bears shot 30.4%, which ultimately proved to be a difference-maker.
 
Junior Re'Tavia Floyd's 15 points and two steals led the Lady Bears. Holton followed with 10 points, Kendall added eight, Jessica Jackson had seven and Camilla Howell had six. Holton led with four assists, while Howell had three. Jackson led with eight rebounds and Kendall added seven.
 
UP NEXT
TMU is on the road Thursday, Nov. 19, at Bryan College, the reigning AAC champs, before returning home on Saturday, Nov. 21, to host Brenau University at 2:00 p.m.
