Women’s basketball captures AAC win on homecoming

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 14, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team celebrated homecoming by capturing their first Appalachian Athletic Conference win against Montreat College Saturday inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena, with a final score of 74-65. The Lady Bears are now sitting at 4-1, 1-1 AAC, while the Cavaliers fell to 1-3, 1-2 AAC.

PLAY BY PLAY

TMU secured the lead from the start with back-to-back 3-pointers from Quan Holton and Re'Tavia Floyd. The Cavaliers put pressure on by responding with shots of their own but the Lady Bears were resilient as they kept the visiting team down by five to take the first quarter (18-13). TMU carried the momentum into the second quarter as they gained a 12-point lead over Montreat from an Aisya Davis 3-pointer, tallying a score of 39-27 at halftime.

The Lady Bears busted it open in the third, it was Holton's shot from the paint that gave TMU their largest lead of the day (29-50) but the Cavaliers fought back to lessen the gap in conclusion of the quarter (46-58). Montreat was able to put the game at a six-point reach but a shot from Sierra Kendall in the paint and two Camilla Howell free throws ultimately clinched the win for the Lady Bears with a final score of 74-65.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"Great conference win today. Always good to protect home," said Head Coach Tiek Fields. "Thought we followed the game plan defensively and it helped us pull out the win today. Overall great team win."

BY THE NUMBERS

TMU shot 45.3% from the field as opposed to Montreat who shot 28.9%. Additionally, the Lady Bears shot 36.4% at the 3-point arc, while the Cavaliers only shot 15.4%.

Floyd led the Lady Bears with 25 points and five steals, followed by Holton who had 12 points and six rebounds. Kendall tallied 11 points of her own with a noteworthy nine rebounds, while Junior Jessica Jackson had ten points. Howell had nine points of her own and went 5 for 6 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears hit the road for the next two games to face AAC foe's Union College Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 5:00 p.m. and Bryan College Thursday, Nov. 19, at 5:00 p.m.
