CLEVELAND, Ga. (Oct. 31,2020) – Saturday evening showed great success for the Truett McConnell University men's soccer team as they clinched their first win of the season over Appalachian Athletic Conference competitor Kentucky Christian University. With a combination of their stout defense and insistent offense, the Bears kept the lead the entire game with a final score of 4-1.

PLAY BY PLAY

TMU started the first period hot off the tracks with a goal in the first four minutes by freshman Lucan Yates from an assist by sophomore Justin Hicks' cross to the box (1-0). The Bears continued to gain momentum by taking three more shots and earning three corner kicks, as opposed to KCU who took three shots and earned only two. The half concluded with a remaining score of 1-0, until the 75th minute of the game when junior Trevor Fick found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Aydan Tyree (2-0).

Keeping the speed, junior Grant Farrell captured a goal of his own after winning possession of the visiting teams goal kick in the 86th minute (3-0). The 88th minute presented a fourth and final goal for the Bears from sophomore Josue Ibanez header off of an assist from Yates corner kick, making the score 4-0. The Knights managed to earn a goal of their own in the 89th minute able to reduce the lead to three, ultimately coming up short with a final score of 4-1.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"Really happy with the way the boys played especially considering all we faced over the last few days: power outage, food schedules changing, etc.," says Head Coach Scott Borchers. "The field conditions were tough but the boys adapted well."

"It was good to score some goals, awesome to see four different players make it on the score sheet by applying what we have been working on in training. I am happy for the boys to get their first win of the season. They have worked hard all season and deserve to be rewarded with the result."

LEADERS

Farrell and Fick individually led the Bears with a goal and a shot apiece, while Yates tallied a goal and assist of his own. Individually, Ibanez had a single goal, followed by Hicks who led with three shots and an assist. Senior Dean Khan had a shot of his own, with Tyree tallying one assist. Junior goalie David Windmiller totaled three saves on the day, sitting at 50 this season.
