Late surge not enough for Lady Bears at Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 20, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team traveled to Columbia College for their 14th Appalachian Athletic Conference game of the season on Monday evening. After trailing by nine at the half (29-21), the Lady Bears sparked a late surge but it proved not enough as the Fighting Koalas clinched the win 58-54. TMU fell to 10-10, 6-8 AAC on the year, while Columbia improved to 6-11, 5-9 AAC.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
After the Lady Bears scored the first four points of the game, TMU put themselves in a hole as the Fighting Koalas pushed to outscore by 11 throughout the first quarter (7-18). The Lady Bears picked it up in the second quarter, however, to outscore by two (14-12), which put them behind by nine at the half (21-29).
 
Re'Tavia Floyd went 2-for-2 from behind the free throw line to spark a dominating 12-0 scoring run by the Lady Bears to get out front by six with 3:32 to go in the third quarter (38-32). Columbia tied it up in the closing seconds of the quarter (41-41) and TMU was unable to get out front the rest of the way. Aisya Davis tied it up in the paint with 5:03 remaining (45-45) and TMU trailed by one with 2:55 to go (46-47), but Columbia held off the visiting Bears long enough to clinch the win.
 
LEADERS
Sierra Kendall led with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, while adding three blocks and two steals. Floyd and Camilla Howell scored 10 points apiece, and Davis added eight points.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bears will hit the road for another AAC matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Bryan College before returning home to the Benjamin F. Brady on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2:00 p.m.
