Lady Bears beat Bluefield with thrilling comeback

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Jan. 18, 2020) – The Truett McConnell University women's basketball team trailed by 13 at the half (28-15), but the Lady Bears rallied back in the second half to pull off the Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over Bluefield College (45-43) on Saturday afternoon inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena. TMU improved to 10-9, 6-8 AAC on the season, while the Rams fell to 6-12, 5-8 AAC.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

Sydney Rumble closed out the tight back and forth first quarter with an and-1 to give the Lady Bears a one-point lead heading into the second quarter (11-10). The Rams, however, dominated the second quarter outscoring the Lady Bears by 14 (4-18) to lead by 13 at halftime (15-28). But the Lady Bears answered with a dominating quarter themselves in the third.

After Bluefield opened up the second half with a bucket in the paint, TMU scored 13 unanswered points to get within two before the fourth quarter (28-30) and then 11 more unanswered points to eventually lead by nine with 5:56 to go in regulation (39-30). After the Lady Bears held the Rams scoreless for a total of 11 minutes, Bluefield eventually fought back and tied it up with eight seconds to go in the game (43-43). However, Re'Tavia Floyd rose to the occasion with a last second bucket in the paint to secure the win (45-43).

LEADERS

Floyd led all scorers with 23 points and added three steals. Sierra Kendall scored 10, Holton scored six and Camilla Howell led with three assists.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears have two back-to-back AAC road games next week. First on the schedule is Columbia College on Monday, Jan. 20, at 5:30 p.m., and Bryan College is on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 5:30 p.m. TMU will return home on Saturday, Jan. 25, for a nonconference matchup at 2:00 p.m.
