Volleyball picks up back-to-back sweeps

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Sept. 28, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University volleyball team hosted a tri-match for the second weekend in a row on Saturday and came out with two sweeps. The Lady Bears first defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Kentucky Christian University in three straight (25-23, 25-11, 25-22) and then turned around to sweep Toccoa Falls College (25-23, 25-13, 25-18), which puts TMU at 8-12, 5-5 AAC on the year.

KCU (3-0)

Both teams accounted for 17 kills in the first set and it was a tight race until the end. After the Lady Bears put themselves in winning position (23-20), the Knights rallied to tie up 23-23 but an error and a Harris Anne Walker block enabled TMU first set win (25-23). TMU went on to dominate in game two outshining the Knights offensively with 18 kills in comparison to KCU's five. The Lady Bears started out the set on a 13-3 run and it was only up from there (25-13).

Game three saw KCU pick up the pace, but the Lady Bears ultimately rose to the occasion in the end. Despite the Knights late rally, two back-to-back kills by Walker and Bethany Ross sealed the sweep (25-22).

LEADERS

Two Lady Bears recorded double-digit kills, led by Ross with 14 kills and Madison Curtis with 10. Additionally, Curtis led with four blocks. Walker added eight kills and freshman Audrey Henderson added seven kills. Abby Maxwell was credited 35 assists and Abby Mumpower led defensively with 10 digs. Hannah Lee added nine digs and Maxwell added eight.

TFC (3-0)

The Screaming Eagles worked to get out front by eight (9-18), but the Lady Bears dug themselves out of the hole. An 8-1 run put them behind by just two (17-19), but two straight Walker kills and a Maxwell dump tied it up 20 apiece. Toccoa pushed two (23-20) but TMU closed out the first set on a strong 5-0 run (25-23). The Lady Bears proved to maintain the momentum heading into game two. TMU dominated Toccoa recording 18 kills comparison to the Screaming Eagles five. In fact, the Lady Bears continued to dominate the rest of the match while they didn't trail for a single point in sets two and three. Overall, the Lady Bears tallied 48 kills in comparison to Toccoa's 29.
