Volleyball wins third straight in thrilling comeback

LAURINBURG, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2019) – After dropping sets two and three, the Truett McConnell University women's volleyball team rallied to come back and defeat St. Andrews University in five sets on the road on Tuesday evening (23-25, 24-26, 27-25, 25-14, 15-7). The Lady Bears improved to 9-12, 6-5 AAC on the year.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"Coming from a great day overall on Saturday, the team came out a little slow," Head Coach Mark Corbin said. "St. Andrews was able to squeeze out two point wins in both the first and second set. We dug ourselves a pretty big hole in the third set, but the girls were determined to not let that stop them from giving everything.

We were down 17-23 in the third set and the girls fought hard to pull off into the fourth and fifth sets. The girls showed a lot of toughness and resiliency tonight and it was definitely a team effort to fight back into the match and pull out a win."

SET BY SET

Despite losing two straight by a slim margin, the Lady Bears were capable of recovering fully. In fact, the Knights were two points from securing a sweep (15-23) but TMU refused to stay behind. After winning set two in extra points, the Lady Bears dominated in the third outshining St. Andrews in the kills category 14-7. Furthermore, TMU carried over the momentum to tally an impressive 11-0 run in the final set, which proved to put the match out of reach for the home team.

LEADERS

Three Lady Bears accounted for double-digit kills led by Madison Curtis with 16. Sophomore Bethany Ross added 14, senior Harris Anne Walker had 13 and freshman Audrey Henderson had nine. Ross earned a double-double with the addition of 15 digs. Abby Maxwell had a decorated stat line on the night with another double-double tallied to her junior campaign with 45 assists and 22 digs, with the addition of four kills and four blocks. Walker led with six blocks and junior Hannah Lee recorded a new season high of 27 digs. Abby Mumpower also had a season high of 18 digs.
