Men’s soccer battles Montreat to 1-1 draw

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Sept. 21, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University men's soccer team battled Montreat College to a 1-1 draw in an Appalachian Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday evening at the TMU Soccer Complex.

Through 110 minutes, both teams accounted for 16 shots while the Bears' had six on target in comparison to Montreat's four. But 89 minutes went by and neither team was capable of finding the back of the net until the Cavaliers scored in transition to dampen TMU's hope of overtime with just a minute left up on the scoreboard (0-1). However, sophomore Javier Rodriguez rose to the occasion for the second time this season.

With 14 seconds to go in regulation, Rodriguez scored the equalizer on a penalty kick (1-1), which forced the game into overtime. In fact, this is already the Bears' third overtime game this season. Last time Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick was to win the Bob Jones game in their first overtime period (2-1).

Another 20 minutes of play went by but neither team could score, which led to TMU's first AAC draw of the season.

Individually, Rodriguez led with four shots, two on goal, and Trevor Fick followed with three shots. Senior Evan Gaffney recorded three more impressive saves to keep the Bears in the game.

Up next, TMU is set to hit the road on Wednesday, Sept. 25, for Milligan College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
