Women’s soccer opens up AAC play with a shutout

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Sept. 14, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team opened up their Appalachian Athletic Conference schedule with a shutout over St. Andrews University on Saturday afternoon at the TMU Soccer Complex (2-0). The Lady Bears, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25, improved to an overall season record of 4-1, 1-0 AAC.

TMU dominated possession throughout all of regulation outshooting the Knights 15-1 in the first half and 16-1 in the second. In fact, St. Andrews was not allowed one shot on target the entire game. The Lady Bears also earned 14 corner kicks in comparison to the Knights' one.

It only took four minutes for the Lady Bears to get up on the scoreboard first. Junior defender Rachel Barnett played fellow junior Jessica Lanier the ball inside the box, which allowed Lanier to find the back of the net (1-0) for her third goal of the season. TMU was unable to score again in the first 45 minutes of play, however, in the 57th minute freshman Madison Wright struck her first collegiate goal outside of the 18 to ensure TMU's lead (2-0).

Individually, Lanier and sophomore Lydia Williams each tallied four shots, one on goal, while Wright shot three, two on goal. Fellow freshmen Haley Davis and Sophia Kay, and senior Jasmine Lanuza added three shots apiece.

Up next, TMU is set to host Tennessee Wesleyan University, who is also receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25, on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 2:00 p.m.
