CLEVELAND, Ga. (April 13, 2019) – Karley Hobbs led the No. 16 Truett McConnell University softball team in Saturday's sweep over the No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies (3-1, 5-1) in their season home finale. The Lady Bears improved to 37-7, 20-2 AAC on the year while the Grizzlies fell to 32-10.
Hobbs was credited both wins which keeps her perfect on the year (26-0). The sophomore leads the country in wins, and ranks in the top 15 with a stellar ERA of 1.20 and top 30 in holding her opponents to a batting average of .188.
GAME ONE (3-1)
After a scoreless two innings, the Grizzlies got up on the scoreboard first in the top of the third (1-0). Neither team was capable of scoring in the fourth and fifth but the Lady Bears dominated the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff homer over the left field fence on a 1-0 count by senior Brie Levy (1-1), freshman Alicia Price drove in the go-ahead run with a double to deep left-center (2-1). Nonetheless, junior Liz Bunton followed up with a double herself to score Price (3-1).
Hobbs forced another three-up three-down inning at the top of the seventh to secure the first win.
Junior Bethany Hyde made the start for the Lady Bears throwing the first 2.2 innings allowing zero hits. Hobbs, throwing the final 4.1, allowed two hits while striking out two.
LEADERS
Price led the way going 2-for-3 including a run and 2B. Bunton went 1-for-2 with a RBI and 2B while Levy and Kathrine Kozlowski went 1-for-3.
GAME TWO (5-1)
TMU's momentum carried over into the first and second innings of game two. Kozlowski singled to drive home Kaitlynn Johnson to immediately put the Lady Bears out front in the bottom of the first (1-0) but four more runs came for TMU in the second. Junior Sara Sullivan had a clutch bunt to score the first run of the dominating inning (2-0). In fact, Jaden Morrison ran home on the wild throw that resulted from Sullivan's squeeze play (3-0). Levy followed with an RBI single to left (4-0) and Lawson's sacrifice fly down the right field line scored TMU's fifth run (5-0).
Meanwhile, Hobbs held the Grizzlies hitless through the first five innings. GGC was capable of getting two hits in the sixth which led to one run (5-1) but it proved not enough.
LEADERS
Levy went perfect (2-for-2) including a RBI and two walks. Sullivan followed going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Kozlowski, Bunton and Morrison added a hit apiece.
