No. 16 Lady Bears win 10th straight, sweep at Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. (April 16, 2019) – The No. 16 Truett McConnell University softball team swept Bluefield College on the road for their ninth and 10th straight wins on Tuesday (11-1, 9-1). The Lady Bears improved to 39-7, 22-2 AAC on the year which keeps them on top in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a two-game cushion.

GAME ONE (11-1)

The Rams were up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first (0-1), however, the Lady Bears matched it in the top of the third. After a lead off bunt for a base hit by Jaden Morrison, Morrison ran home on a defensive mistake (1-1). At the top of the fourth, Kataryna Fuller scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice (2-1). TMU went on to put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth. The Lady Bears swung for eight hits and recorded nine runs (11-1). Liz Bunton, Morrison, Kaitlynn Johnson, Brie Levy, Briley Lawson, Kathrine Kozlowski and Alicia Price were all credited RBI's.

Bethany Hyde earned her 12th win of her junior campaign after pitching a complete game allowing just three hits while striking out seven.

LEADERS

Levy and Kozlowski each went 3-for-4. Levy added a run and an RBI while Kozlowski had two runs, two RBI's and a 2B. Morrison went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Lawson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

GAME TWO (9-1)

Lawson scored Johnson in the top of the first to immediately put the Lady Bears out front (1-0). Levy, however, launched her sixth home run over the left field fence on a 2-1 count (2-0). To follow, Bunton drove home Price with a single to left (3-0).

After a scoreless fourth and fifth, Sullivan sparked a dominating inning for the Lady Bears in the sixth with a single to right. Levy, once again, smacked another home run (her seventh on the year) to left on a 0-0 count to also score Sullivan (5-0). Furthermore, Lawson immediately after hit her eighth homer of her freshman campaign, also on the first pitch (6-0).

The Lady Bears' momentum carried over into the seventh. Following a leadoff double by Bunton, pinch runner Fuller scored TMU's seventh run on a fielder's choice (7-0). Levy's sac fly drove home Morrison (8-0) and Sullivan ran home on a defensive error (9-0). The Rams scored one in the bottom of the seventh but it proved not enough as the Lady Bears clinched their 10th AAC sweep of the year.

Sophomore Karley Hobbs, this week's AAC and NAIA pitcher of the week, was credited her 27th win to remain undefeated on the mound. Hobbs allowed six hits, one walk and struck out nine batters.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears face St. Andrews University on Wednesday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m., on the road for their final regular season contest.
