No. 16 Lady Bears sweep CIU in shutout fashion

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 10, 2019) – The No. 16 Truett McConnell University softball team recorded their second Appalachian Athletic Conference shutout sweep at Columbia International University on Wednesday afternoon (1-0, 10-0). The Lady Bears improved to 33-7, 18-2 AAC on the year, which keeps them on top in the AAC, while the Rams declined to 10-28, 2-18 AAC.

GAME ONE (1-0)

Junior Bethany Hyde led TMU through the first three innings giving up zero hits and striking out five. Junior Macey Dunaway's single to right field drove home pinch runner Kataryna Fuller for the winning run in the top of the second (1-0). The closest the Lady Bears got to scoring again was in the top of the sixth when runners were left on second and third.

Hyde was credited the win while Karley Hobbs earned the save after stepping in to relieve the final four innings allowing two hits while striking out five.

LEADERS

Sophomore Kathrine Kozlowski led the way going 2-for-3, including a 2B, while Kaitlynn Johnson and Dunaway tallied a hit apiece.

GAME TWO (10-0)

After a scoreless two innings, the Lady Bears got hot in the top of the fifth. Jaden Morrison led off with a bunt base hit and four more hits came to follow. Morrison ran home on Sara Sullivan's single to right-center field (1-0) and Sullivan was sent home on freshman Briley Lawson's double to right-center (2-0). Kozlowski's sacrifice fly scored Brie Levy (3-0) and freshman Alicia Price's single to left field scored pinch runner Katie Carruth (4-0).

Still holding the Rams scoreless, TMU recorded another big inning at the top of the fifth. Kozlowski's second double of the day scored Levy (5-0). The Lady Bears' sixth run was scored by Kozlowski on a wild pitch (6-0) and the seventh was scored on a ground out (7-0). The game was put out of reach in the top of the sixth when TMU ran home three more times (10-0)..

Hobbs earned the win after throwing a perfect game allowing six hits and walking none. Hobbs remains undefeated on the mound (22-0) and holds her opponents to a batting average of .192, which leads the AAC. Additionally, Hobbs leads the AAC with an ERA of 1.28.  

LEADERS

Morrison went perfect at the plate (3-for-3) with two runs and a stolen base. Price also went perfect (2-for-2) with one walk, one RBI and one run. Levy and Kozlowski each went 2-for-3. Kozlowski added three RBI's and two 2B's while Levy added two runs and a RBI.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears have a quick turnaround as they face Allen University on Thursday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m., for another AAC doubleheader.
