Bears fall short in first two games of opening series (3-1, 5-3)

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 1, 2019) – Despite a great start in which the Truett McConnell University baseball jumped on the board first in games one and two, Georgetown College handed the Bears their first two losses of the season in their first nonconference series. The Tigers came out on top 3-1 in game one and 5-3 in game two of Friday's doubleheader.

GAME ONE (3-1)

After Gregory Elder Jr. held the Tigers hitless on the mound in the top of the first and second, the Bears earned two hits to score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second. Senior Austin Bishop singled to shallow left-center and freshman Connor Bearden made his debut as Bear with a triple to deep right-center to send Bishop home (1-0).

Freshman Tyler Pruett also made his debut as a Bear coming into relieve Elder in the fifth further holding Georgetown scoreless. Elder went on to hold the Tigers hitless for two more innings but Georgetown was capable of scoring two runs in the top sixth and one in the top of seventh off of junior reliever Nick Hammonds.

The Bears, in fact, outhit the Tigers 7-3 but it proved not enough.

LEADERS

Junior Josh Johnston, freshman John Michael McRae and Bishop all led going 2-for-3 at the plate.

GAME TWO (5-3)

Designated hitter Jackson Meadors smacked a deep fly ball to right-center that sent Calob Rowland home for the Bears' first run of the game (1-0). After a scoreless second inning for both teams, a Georgetown homerun tied it up in the third (1-1). The Tigers came out in the top of the sixth aggressive scoring four runs on reliever Hammonds to break the tie (5-1). TMU responded with three hits and two runs in attempt to come back in from behind but the Bears couldn't capitalize in the end.

Starter Craig Barton pitched through the first five innings allowing just three hits, one run and striking out three. Senior Ryan Reagan came in to pitch in the seventh inning to keep the Tigers at five runs in order to give the Bears a chance in the bottom of the seventh. Reagan saw four batters and allowed zero hits.

Both teams accounted for four hits.

LEADERS

Meadors led the way in game two going 2-for-3 while Johnston and senior Patrick Overstreet added a hit apiece. McRae and Bearden also each had a RBI.
