Women’s soccer clinches first AAC tournament title in program history

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 15, 2019) – For the first time in Truett McConnell University history, the women's soccer team won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at the TMU Soccer Complex. The Co-Regular Season Champions, No. 1 seeded Lady Bears and No. 2 seeded Tennessee Wesleyan University who are both receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25 poll, went head to head throughout all 102 minutes of the game, but it was the Lady Bears (18-2, 12-1 AAC) who came out on top in double overtime (2-1).

While the Lady Bears have just clinched their first ever AAC tournament title, the team has also recorded the program's first ever 18-win season.

With 8:06 to go in the second overtime period, sophomore Sydney League, an All-AAC first team member, passed to the feet of junior Jennifer McCall, the AAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, inside the six to score the winning goal (2-1). McCall's impressive strike flew between two TWU defenders and past the TWU goalkeeper.

In the first half, junior Tori Wilson, an All-Tourney and All-AAC second team member, dribbled all the way up to the top of 18 to score the Lady Bears' first goal in the bottom left corner of the goal (1-0). Nonetheless, the Bulldogs responded with an equalizer on a penalty kick just a minute later (1-1). While neither team was capable of scoring in the second half, TMU outshot the Bulldogs 8-2. Overall, TMU outshot TWU 17-6.

A minute before the winning goal, League came close to winning it on a header that bounced off the crossbar. Lydia Williams, an All-AAC second team member, led the way with four shots, one on goal, while McCall followed with three shots of her own. League and Jessica Lanier, an All-AAC second team member, added two apiece. Hope Foster was credited one save on the day.

While McCall was named AAC tournament MVP, Rachel Barnett, Marissa Harkins and Wilson also earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Bears will find out where they will be playing in the NAIA National Championships opening round on Monday, November 18.
