Volleyball punches ticket to AAC postseason with win over Bluefield

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Oct. 25, 2019) – The Truett McConnell University women's volleyball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bluefield College on Friday night for senior night and Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Night. The Lady Bears (15-16, 11-9 AAC) dropped set one, but picked it up to win three straight inside the TMU Bear Cave (22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19).

COACH'S COMMENTS

"It was an overall great night," Head Coach Mark Corbin said. "It took a team effort to get this win to put us in the conference tournament. I am very happy that the seniors got this strong win on their night and we are very grateful for the fans that came out to support our team on such a big night."

TMU's trip to the AAC tournament will be the second trip in program history.

SET BY SET

The first game saw both teams tied in the end at 22 apiece, however, three back to back Lady Bear errors handed the Rams their lone win of the night (22-25). Game two was also a tightly contested set with TMU getting out front by three on a 5-0 run (19-16) and Bluefield getting out front by one with a 5-0 of their own (22-21), but TMU only allowed the Rams one more point. A Ranavia Neal kill tied tie it up (23-23) and a Bethany Ross kill sealed the first TMU win of the night (25-23).

Bluefield rallied in the third game to get into scoring position (21-24) but a Rams attacking error sparked a clutch TMU 5-0 run to win it in extra points (26-24). The Lady Bears' momentum proved to carry over into the fourth and final set. TMU started off on a 5-0 run and did not allow the Rams to lead by any margin. In fact, the set was never tied and the closest the Rams got to the Lady Bears was by a point. In the end, an Audrey Henderson kill clinched the Lady Bears' 11th AAC win in four sets (25-19), the most the program has ever captured.

LEADERS

Ross and Abby Maxwell led the team with a double-double apiece. Ross led the offense alongside Henderson with 10 kills apiece. Ross added 16 digs while Maxwell was credited 36 assists and 13 digs. Senior Madison Curtis followed with nine kills and led with nine blocks, while Neal added five kills and four blocks. Junior Hannah Lee led the defense with 24 digs; Abby Mumpower added 16 digs and sophomore Taylor Roland recorded 11.
