CLEVELAND, Ga. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Freshmen Lydia Williams and Sydney Ziglar led the Truett McConnell University women's soccer team to a 12-0 victory over Bluefield College for their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener with a hat trick apiece.
THE TWELVE GOALS
Susanna Peppers and Jasmin Lanuza got the Lady Bears up on the scoreboard 12 minutes into the first half first. Lanuza sent a ball to Peppers leading her to her first goal of the evening. Two minutes later, sophomore Tori Wilson takes a corner kick which led to senior Carson Batye's first goal of the season. Lanuza sent a ball in the box and Batye used her head to find the back of the net (2-0).
At 30:53, Peppers dribbled to connect for her second goal of the night and fifth goal of the season (3-0). Fellow junior Jessica Lanier booted the ball past the goalkeeper for the Bears' fourth goal of the game. With 14 minutes remaining, senior Megan McCall started from TMU's side of the field and dribbled through a handful of defenders to score her first goal of the year.
Williams' first goal came two minutes later after firing a shot past the keeper. Ziglar's first goal came seven minutes left in the half inside the box off the feet of sophomore Breanna Barentine. Williams then connected for her second goal off Lanier's foot. Lanier and Ziglar's goals in the final two minutes concluded the first half. Fellow freshman Mackenzie Taylor was credited the assist on Ziglar's goal.
Ziglar and Williams went on to claim their hat tricks in the second half within three minutes of one another.
LEADERS
Williams led with nine shots while Peppers and Lanier tallied six. Bayte and Ziglar connected for four apiece.
