Lady Bears Softball Continues To Make Noise In AAC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dayton, TN. | On Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Bears traveled to Dayton, TN, to take on the Bryan College Lions in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Game 1

Bethany Hyde would start on the mound for the Lady Bears in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Hyde has pitched in twenty-one games for the Lady Bears, posting an earned run average of only 2.92. The Lions would score one run on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the 1st to claim the lead at 1-0.

Both teams' offenses could not generate any runs up through the 4th inning, however the Lady Bears were able to break the scoring drought in the 5th inning. With one out in the top of the 5th, sophomore Peyton Wilson singled to left. Jaden Morrison stepped to the plate and put pressure on the defense as she laid down a bunt down the third base line. The third baseman rushed her throw and ended up throwing past the first baseman, allowing Peyton Wilson to come all the way around and score to tie the game at 1-1. Morrison is currently 4th overall in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in batting average. With Morrison reaching third base on the wild throw, the Lady Bears had a great opportunity to take the lead. Kaitlynn Hay stepped into the batter's box and reached first base on an infield single, which ended up driving Morrison home to take the lead.

The Lions answered back in the bottom of the 5th with a run of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Karley Hobbs was called upon to enter the game in relief for the Lady Bears.

In the bottom of the 7th, Peyton Wilson ignited the Lady Bears offense with a double in the gap of left-center field. Jaden Morrison then moved Wilson to third on a bunt. With runners on the corners and no one out, the Lady Bears set themselves up for another scoring opportunity as Kaitlynn Hay stepped in the box. Hay delivered a sharp ground ball to second, forcing an error and allowing everyone to reach base safely. Wilson would score on the error to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage. Sara Sullivan would drive Jaden Morrison home on a ground out to third base to extend the Lady Bears lead to 4-2.

Karley Hobbs kept the Lions offense quiet in the 7th inning to secure the win for the Lady Bears, as they took down Bryan College in Game 1 by a final score of 4-2.

Game 2

Karley Hobbs would stay on the mound for the Lady Bears in Game 2 of the doubleheader, as they looked to earn their fourth consecutive series sweep in a row.

The Lady Bears came out ready to play in the top of the 1st inning. Kaitlynn Hay began the Lady Bears run as she reached first base on an error by the third baseman. Sara Sullivan moved Hay to second with a sacrifice bunt. Milly Martinet singled to left and ended up sending Kaitlynn Hay home as she was obstructed of her path to run by an infielder, which allowed her to score for the Lady Bears. With Martinet on second base, Reba Jones singled to left to move Martinet to third base. With an opportunity to add one more run to the scoreboard, Brie Levy hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send Milly Martinet home, as the Lady Bears took an early 2-0 lead.

After an active 1st inning from the Lady Bears, both sides were held quiet offensively up until the 6th inning.

In the top of the 6th, the Lady Bears broke the silence after Peyton Wilson walked, Jaden Morrison singled, and Kaitlynn Hay walked. With the bases loaded, Sara Sullivan singled up the middle to drive in both Wilson and Morrison as the Bears took a 4-0 lead.

The Lions would score one run of their own in the bottom of the 6th, but in the end, the Lady Bears held Bryan College off to earn the sweep and Game 2 win, 4-1.

After Wednesday's sweep of Bryan, the Lady Bears are currently receiving national votes for the first time in program history, as well as tied for 1st place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Lady Bears now hold an eight game win streak, which is their longest of the season.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Friday, April 13th, as they travel to Point University in West Point, GA.
