CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 3, 2018) – The Truett McConnell University women's soccer team, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national top 25, outshot the Columbia International University Rams 32-4 but it was senior
Megan McCall's goal that lifted the Lady Bears (1-0) in the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships at the TMU Soccer Complex on Saturday. Last time they met, the Lady Bears blanked the Rams 3-0 on the road.
Â
TMU's shutout over the Rams marked the team's 15th straight win and 15th shutout of the year. The Lady Bears improved to 16-1 on the year and still lead the nation in shutouts per game and rank number two in total shutouts.
Â
M. McCall led TMU with eight shots overall while
Jennifer McCall and
Jessica Lanier added five shots apiece. The Rams' goalkeeper was forced to stay on her toes as she compiled a total of 11 saves. TMU earned a total of 11 corner kicks in comparison to CIU's one. In fact, four of the Lady Bears' chances on the goal came from corner kicks sent from
Tori Wilson.
Â
M. McCall's goal came in the 66th minute after fellow senior
Lauren Huston on the right wing found the feet of Lanier just outside the box. Lanier placed the ball perfectly for M. McCall to drill her ninth goal of the season (1-0).
Â
"Today we got to see that postseason is always a new season," Head Coach
David McDowell said. "Teams always give a bit more and CIU definitely came here and battled. However, I'm continually proud of our girls for always playing Truett soccer. We moved the ball very well and created a lot of chances.
Â
The girls have played a lot minutes this season and played a lot of good soccer too. Now it's about showing the grit they have to thrive in this postseason."
Â
Up next, TMU will host Milligan College for the semifinals on Tuesday, November 6. The time is to be determined and will be announced when determined.
